The crash occurred on Benz Street near Prindle Avenue in Ansonia at about 12:30 pm on Monday, December 9, 2013. The driver of the van reportedly crashed into the rear of the school bus. All but one of the 12 students onboard were taken to Griffin Hospital for evaluation. Four students complained of neck and back injuries. The bus driver was also taken to the hospital. The van driver reportedly admitted he was not paying attention. In general, such accidents are frequent in Connecticut. Although it is not clear what caused the driver here to not stop in time, it is very easy to be distracted. Distracted driving has become a national problem over the last 10 years. With smart phones, the temptation to view a text or listen to a voice mail or send an email or check a score or check the stock market is ever present. Drivers must be disciplined and vigilant. As drivers, we are in control of and are responsible for the safe movement of large (and potentially dangerous) vehicles. Cars do not yet drive themselves. Safety is the responsibility of the person causing the vehicle to move. If your child was seriously injured in a school bus crash, contact Jackson O’Keefe.
