The crash occurred at about 7 am during the morning commute on Tuesday November 19, 2013.  The decedent’s vehicle crossed from the eastbound lanes into the median and then into westbound traffic, striking a tractor trailer and another vehicle.  The crash occurred near exit 68.

While it is not clear what happened here, one possibility is a driver falling asleep behind the wheel.

Signs of Tired Driving

Although the signs of tired driving might be difficult to identify at the time that you’re on the road, they are painstakingly evident after the fact. Therefore, a crucial aspect to the investigative processes that are conducted after your accident should be the driving behaviors of the at-fault driver at the time that the accident occurred. Any of the following behaviors could serve as a clear indication to our injury team that the collision which injured you was the result of a driver who fell asleep at the wheel.

Drifting between lanes

Yawning or blinking excessively

Hitting rumble strips on the road

Trouble recalling the minutes and miles immediately preceding the accident

Missing a previous exit that could have gotten the driver to his or her destination

Accident Statistics

About 37 percent of all drivers admit to falling asleep at the wheel at least once in their lifetime, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Agency reported that there are roughly 56,000 road crashes due to driver fatigue each year in the United States. About 40,000 injuries and 1,550 deaths are attributed to asleep at the wheel accidents.
